Author of Buddhism without Beliefs

Stephen Batchelor

will be giving a public talk on

The Secular Buddha

on Friday 22nd October 2010, 7:00 - 9:00pm

at the Byron Community and Cultural Centre, Byron Bay

69 Jonson Street, Byron Bay

What is distinctive about the Buddha's teaching that sets it apart from mainstream Indian religious traditions? Through exploring this question, we will try and recover the radical, non-mystical core of Siddhattha Gotama's vision. By discarding metaphysical beliefs, we will envisage a thoroughly secular Buddhism, which is focused entirely on responding to the suffering of this world.

Stephen Batchelor is a Buddhist teacher, writer and translator known for his secular views and his bestselling book Buddhism without Beliefs. He was a monk for 10 years, first studying and pacticing Tibetan Buddhism and then Korean Zen. He travels widely, teaches regularly in North America and Europe, and is one of the guiding teachers of the Gaia House meditation centre in England. His most recent books are Living with the Devil: A Meditation on Good and Evil (2004) and Confession of a Buddhist Atheist (2010).
